(Valerianae tinctura FP) (Syn. Valerian drops) oral drops

Valerian tincture contains not less than 0.028% of sesquiterpenes converted into valerenic acid.

Composition:

Valerian root tincture - Valerianae tinctura prepared according to FP VI formula.
(extraction solvent: ethanol 70 % v/v)
Ethanol content: 64 - 68 % v/v.

Packaging contains: 35 g of Valerian tincture.

What is Valerian tincture and why it is used

Valerian tincture is a herbal medical product produced as a result of maceration in the following proportion:
1 g of valerian root per 5 g of ethanol-water solvent 70 % v/v.

Indication

Temporary states of nervous tension and temporary problems with falling asleep.

Before you apply Valerian tincture

Read patient information leaflet carefully.

Do not apply Valerian tincture:

In children younger than 12 years of age because of lack of suitable clinical trials.
Do not apply in case of hypersensitivity to valerian.

Observe special care while administering the drug to specific groups:

Single dose: 20 - 60 drops (which corresponds to 1-3 ml of fluid) contains: 0.519- 1.557g of ethanol (about 1.038 g of ethanol on the average).
Because of 64 - 68 % v/v ethanol content in the tincture, it is not recommended to apply in case of epilepsy, liver diseases and alcoholism.

Pregnancy and breast feeding

It is not recommended to apply Valerian tincture during pregnancy and lactation because of lack of suitable clinical trials.

Driving of vehicles and operation of moving mechanisms

It is not recommended to take valerian preparations directly (that is about 2 hours) before driving a car or operating moving mechanisms. The drug causes impairment of psychomotor aptitude, the ability to drive vehicles and operate moving mechanisms as well as increases sleepiness.

Use of other drugs

So far, no interactions have been described with other drugs taken simultaneously with valerian preparations. If the patient is taking other drugs, it is necessary to consult a physician.

How to apply Valerian tincture

Apply the drug orally:

Adults and children over 12 years of age:

  • in case of nervous tension states: 3 times a day 20 to 60 drops (that is 1-3 ml of the fluid).
  • as the agent facilitating falling asleep: ½ -1 hour before sleep 20 to 60 drops (that is 1-3 ml of the fluid).

Instruction of administration

No special requirements.

In case of taking higher than recommended dose of Valerian tincture

Do not exceed the recommended dose. Taking about 100 g of the tincture may cause mild symptoms: fatigue, stomach aches, sensation of pressure in the chest, hand tremor and dilation of pupils, disappearing within 24 hours. Ethanol contained by the drug may also cause overdose symptoms.

In case of skipping the dose

Valerian tincture is usually taken temporarily, in case of need.

The following may appear after discontinuation of treatment with Valerian tincture:

Valerian tincture is usually taken temporarily, in case of nervous tension or problems with falling asleep, therefore not taking it will have no effects.

Possible undesired effects

So far, no undesired effects have been reported in case of application of the recommended doses in short-term therapy. Gastrointestinal symptoms (e.g. nausea, contractions of the alimentary tract) may occur sporadically. In case of other undesired effects, not mentioned here, inform your physician about them.

Storage of Valerian tincture

Store in closed containers, at the temperature not exceeding 25°C, protect against light.
Store out of reach and sight of children.

Do not use Valerian tincture after expiry period.
